For next week,
Watch a couple of TED talks on scientific topics: http://www.ted.com/
Pay attention to what makes the talk effective and how the speaker explains and presents their points.
Note how the speakers begin their talks: what is the first thing they say, and how does it engage the audience?
Compose an opening line for a talk you might give.
Here is an article on giving scientific talks (optional reading, but useful): Bragg66_TalkingAboutScience1.pdf
Here is the proposal format I forgot to post last week:

This article, "The Art of Grantsmanship" by Jacob Kraicer, is very concise but full of useful tips for writing grant proposals: http://www.hfsp.org/funding/art-grantsmanship
