New Edition of German-Language ECHR Handbook

As I am currently enjoying the hospitality of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Menschenrechte (BIM) in Vienna, where I am doing some research, I cannot fail to mention the publication of the fifth edition of an important Austrian publication on the ECHR: 'Europäische Menschenrechtskonvention. Ein Studienbuch' written by Christoph Grabenwarter, professor of law at the Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien and judge in the Austrian Constitutional Court, and Katharina Pabel, professor at the Johannes Kepler Universität Linz. The thorough but compact volume deals with both the substance of ECHR rights as well as with the Convention's procedural law and includes the newest developments such as the upcoming accession of the European Union to the European Convention. I have already benefited a lot from its clear and systematic treatment of the provisions of the ECHR.

Creating a Stained Glass Look by Embossing Transparency Film Free Tutorial By Laura Carson of Artfully Musing Blog

I just love stained glass and would like to learn how to create beautiful stained glass creations. That's not going to happen anytime soon, but in the meantime I can learn how to create stain glass looking mixed media creations using transparency film. With this in mind I was happy to see that Laura Carson had a wonderful tutorial on her Artfully Musing blog showing you how to create a beautiful stained glass look by embossing transparency film. How beautiful is Laura's creation?  I'm looking forward to learning how to do this.  How about you?

Here's what Laura had to say about her tutorial:  In November I posted a tutorial on “Creating a Stained Glass Look Using a Glass Slide”. Embossing transparency film is another option to creating the look of stained glass although I don’t think is sparkles quite as nicely as real glass. But with transparency film, you can print and emboss any digital image, whereas with glass, you are limited to rubber stamps.

The base of the ATC below is an image of an art nouveau stained glass window that I printed on transparency film and embossed. So that you could better see the colors on the transparency, the first image of the piece is photographed on white paper. The second image is photographed with the light behind the piece. Be sure to click on the image to see all the details.

Autumn Blessing Free Quilt Pattern By Kaaren Johnston of The Painted Quilt

Just when I think I couldn't possible add anything else to my Fall decorating "to do" list along comes another mini wall quilt that is just too charming to resist.   Kaaren Johnston has yet another charming pattern on her The Painted Quilt blog showing you how to make an "Autumn Blessings" mini quilt.  My husband may divorce me, but this is definitely going on my Fall "to do" list.

First Friday Freebie #13 - Autumn Blessings

Here's what Kaaren had to say about her pattern:  It sure would be nice to be posting this month’s First Friday Freebie on a cool, crisp Autumn day but that’s not going to happen until tomorrow. For the last four days, we’ve been experiencing record breaking temperatures for this time of year in the mid to high 90’s and along with the oppressive humidity, it’s been brutal.

This month’s FFF is an Autumn-inspired mini quilt called Autumn Blessings. It combines both pieced and stitched blocks with some wool appliquéd elements. I had the best time not only creating it but also when adding the embellishments. I could easily have gotten carried away and found that I really had to restrain myself. I hope you have fun making it your own.

Kaaren's Bio: I am an artist and have recently retired from actively designing, publishing and travel teaching in the decorative painting industry. A short while later, in December of 2010, we moved from Eastern Ontario to the beautiful Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. Quilting, stitching, applique and most recently rug hooking have become my new passions. Oh, and did I mention that I love to make and collect pincushions and needlecases! Join me on the First Friday of every month when I release a new Freebie design for you to make and enjoy.

An Autumn Sampler Free Quilt Pattern By Kaaren Johnston of The Painted Quilt

I can never get enough of wall quilts - especially those for the Fall season.   So, I was delighted to see that Kaaren Johnston had a wonderful pattern on her The Painted Quilt blog showing you how to make an autumn sampler.   Given my love of Fall this is definitely going on my "to do" list.

First Friday Freebie #22 - An Autumn Sampler

Here's what Kaaren had to say about her pattern:  After four days of rain and an unseasonal ‘nor-easter thrown in for good measure, we have our fingers crossed for blue skies and sunshine today. Although yesterday dawned bright and cool, we had to fire up our furnace and build a fire in the wood stove for the first time this season. We even had a few wet flurries of the white stuff. Yikes! I think that autumn has officially arrived!

To celebrate the season, this month’s First Friday Freebie was designed to showcase the fading days of summer and the start of autumn…my favorite season! Watermelon, sunflowers, crows, wasps, pumpkins, birdhouses, flowers and of course the alphabet are included in this sampler.

In the meantime, mom & I did a fun little project yesterday. Glittered pumpkins:

I was driving to the Post Office yesterday, and decided to stop at the farm market on the way back for some squash. Those little tiny pumpkins always catch my eye! I already had a few but decided to get some more and suddenly, I had this idea to glitter them and add some dried flowers to the top. So I bought 8 pumpkins and drove over to mom's house! (Ya'll know I love my glitter!)

Please respect Pamela's TERMS OF USE:  I like to share Craft and Embroidery Tutorials on how I do a variety of projects and techniques and helpful hints. I add to this list regularly. Please feel free to download the directions and if you try them, please let me know if you enjoyed the project!

I enjoy a quiet life in our little cottage by a lake in Northern Illinois. I frequent flea markets and antique shops looking for do-dads that I can sew on to my stitching projects. I offer some of my handmade items, along with my mom's and my sister's, in my Etsy shop. I enjoy baking and share many of my recipes here. And did I mention glitter?

Here's what Carol had to say about her tutorial: Hi Everyone,  Sorry it has been so long. You know what it is like, not enough hours in the day. You have your day planned out and  then *** bingo, it takes a whole new direction.  These days most of my time seems to be taken up with administration and not so much time actually doing SRE. It is so peaceful to just spend the time working with Silk Ribbons, sometimes I even get withdrawal symptoms.

I took some photos of these brilliant Sunflowers while in Brisbane earlier this year. So large bright and cheery, even with showers threatening overhead.

Carol's Bio: My life is at the stage that I can indulge in my interests of Embroidery and Crafts. Ribbons, beads, threads, laces and trims all have a special place here in my studio.

My childhood was spent on the family dairy farm in Toowoomba, Queensland. When I was about 12 years old, my Grandmother (nicknamed Daisy – hence the name Daisy’s Garden) introduced me to the joys of needlework. I am so thankful to her for giving me a skill that I could enjoy and build upon for life. After the chores were done, whenever I had some spare time, I would sit quietly on the front porch and stitch away. I remember these times so fondly. When I retired, and finally had some time to myself, I had the desire to do embroidery again. I didn’t get far with the fancy work tablecloth however, once I discovered Silk Ribbon Embroidery, I became addicted!

New Book on ECHR - EU Interactions

Giuseppe Martinico, of the Centro de Estudios Politicos y Constitucionales in Spain and Oreste Pollicino, Associate Professor of Comparative Law at Bocconi University in Italy have published a new book in which they research the extent of convergence between Europe's two main international legal systems: ECHR Law and EU law. The book, published by Edward Elgar Publishing, is entitled 'The Interaction Between Europe’s Legal Systems - Judicial Dialogue and the Creation of Supranational Laws'. This is the abstract:

This book examines the broad issue of the rapprochement between the legal systems of the EU and the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) and asks whether the two systems are converging. While the literature on the issue of the national application of EC/EU law or that of ECHR norms is voluminous, a specific comparative analysis that takes into account the national judicial treatment of both laws has been lacking, until now.

This detailed book begins with some reflections on the importance of judicial interactions in European constitutional law, before going on to compare the relationships between national judges and supranational laws across 27 European jurisdictions. For the same jurisdictions it then makes a careful assessment of way in which ECHR and EU law is handled before national courts and also sets this in the context of the original goals and aims of the two regimes. Finally, the authors broaden the perspective to bring in the prospects of European enlargement towards the East, and consider the implications of this for the rapprochement between the two regimes.

The Interaction between Europe’s Legal Systems will strongly appeal to academics and students in European law, comparative law, theory of law, postgraduate students and LLM students in European law and in comparative law.

And here is the table of contents:

Contents: Part I 1. The Interaction between Europe’s Legal Systems: An Introduction to the Investigation 2. The Formal Parameter 3. The Law in Action Part II 4. External Convergence: Towards a Rapprochement of the EU and ECHR Regimes After the Enlargement of Europe to the East 5. The Enlargement of Europe to the East and the Reaction of the European Court of Human Rights 6. The Enlargement of Europe to the East and the Reaction of the European Court of Justice 7. Crazy Quilt Spider Web Free Tutorial By Pamela Kellogg of Kitty and Me Designs

Now that you know how to embroider a spider you have to learn how to embroider the spider's web. What's a spider without a spider's web?  Right? Well, Pamela Kellogg has a tutorial on her Kitty & Me Designs blog showing you how to embroider a spider's web. I just love creating them and hope you do, too.

Crazy Quilt Spider Web Tutorial
and Embroidered Spider Webs With Kreinik Metallics

Copyright © 2010 - All Rights Reserved - Written by Pamela Kellogg of Kitty & Me Designs.

Here's what Pamela had to say about her tutorial: I was recently asked why I use spiderwebs on so many of my crazy quilt pieces. Well, the Victorians used spiderwebs quite often on their quilts. The Victorians loved anything exotic and ornate! They had a great love for nature. Not only that, they considered spiders in their homes to be a sign of good luck.

Back to the reason that I use them on my crazy quilts so often is that many of mine have a garden theme to them. Spider webs seem to work well for me. And I really love doing them!!

If you look closely at real spider webs, they're mini works of art! Each is unique, no two are alike and they are perfectly imperfect:

Needlecase Free Tutorial By Kaaren Johnston of The Painted Quilt

Do you just love needle-cases like I do?   If you do then you'll be happy to know that Kaaren Johnston has a wonderful tutorial on her The Painted Quilt blog showing you how to make a needle-case.  Enjoy!

Copyright © 2009 - All Rights Reserved - Kaaren Johnston of The Painted Quilt

Here's what Kaaren had to say about her tutorial: I have had several requests to purchase the needlecases that have appeared in earlier posts. Since I’m now retired and have the time to play and create at will, I’ve decided that I would rather continue to enjoy myself and leave the designing and selling to the ‘younger’ folks out there.

Having said that, I’ve been asked if I would consider doing a tutorial on my needlecase instead. Since I love to share, here it is.

Please respect Kaaren's TERMS OF USE:  The use of my pattern/design and tutorials is limited to individual and personal use only. Distributing or selling my pattern or tutorials in any form is not permitted. They may not be used for commercial purposes unless written permission is granted. Credit for my pattern and tutorials should be included if displayed in any manner. Individual users may enlarge or reduce the size of the drawings for their personal use but may not alter them in any other way.

Make as many as you’d like, sell a million of them, show them on your blogs and make lots of money if that’s your ambition. All I ask is that you don’t make my designs into patterns to sell as your own creations…even if you adjust and or alter the measurements. Thanks for your understanding.

Do Small Things With Great Love Stitchery Free Pattern By Amy of nanaCompany

Looking for a sweet embroidery design to add to a baby quilt or mini wall quilt?  If you are then you'll want to check out the tutorial that Amy has on her nanaCompany blog.  What a great saying.

Copyright © 2012 - All Rights Reserved - Amy of nanaCompany.

Here's what Amy had to say about her pattern: "We cannot do great things, but we can do small things with great love." ~ Mother Teresa

I love this quote. It's what I try to do in my own way. Apparently Mother Teresa, whose real name was Agnes, chose the name Teresa when she took her religious vows in honor of Saint Therese de Lisieux ~ "the little flower" who believed that life should be spent scattering "flowers"... that is, small acts of love.

So, when I wanted to embroider these words, it made a lot of sense to frame them with lazy daisies and little buds. And I've turned my pencil drawing into a pdf pattern for you...

Amy's Bio - Hi, my name is Amy. I live in a small house near the ocean in Los Angeles with my three children and my awesome husband. We are a lively family but we live very quietly ~ I can honestly say that all five of us are homebodies, looking forward to returning home whenever we go out. But the fun thing I've discovered while looking through my camera these past years, is that there is a lot of beauty in our "everyday." And I'm looking forward to sharing with you my life as I create and explore new ways to find that beauty.

Completely self-taught in everything, I am a "see it- do it" kind of girl. And I love trying new things. Maybe someday I'll have a real style, but for now I love vintage and modern, girly and clean, and everything in between.

Let's Quilt While We're Ahead - The Log Cabin Cushion Free Tutorial By Ros Coffey of RosMadeMe Blog

I just LOVE decorating with pillows and love changing them for different seasons and holidays - or for no reason at all.  If you do, too then you'll be pleased to know that Ros Coffey has a tutorial on her RosMadeMe Blog blog showing you how to make a wonderful log cabin cushion.  Have fun decorating.

Let's Quilt While We're Ahead - The Log Cabin Cushion

Copyright © 2012 - All Rights Reserved - Written by Ros Coffey of RosMadeMe Blog.

Here's what Ros had to say about her tutorial:  We have been doing quite a few projects recently that have used some quilting now it's time for us to venture into some proper quilting blocks and I thought we could start with a nice easy pattern, Log Cabin which is also known as Cathedral Steps. It is a great block to start with as it gets you used to cutting and sewing accurately. I know that the purists may say but you are using a machine but sometimes you need some instant gratification and later we will move on to hand sewing quilting blocks... but lets learn to walk before we embark on a marathon.

Ros's Bio:I live by the sea, in Essex, in Leigh-on-sea. I have been making things since I was a child, earliest memories were embroidering squares of binca matting, making felt egg cups and ripping back my knitting when my sister had picked up a dropped stitch... yep, it really did have to be all my own work! I am a dreadful hoarder, with stashes of wool and fabric hidden around my house, together with the projects that I have not yet finished. I am currently making cushions, quilted, appliqued, stencilled... actually just anything that I will enjoy crafting.

Miscellaneous News

Today, I have a number of miscellaneous issues for you. First, over at the Multirights Blog, there is a report about the resumed negotations between the European Union and the Council of Europe on the EU's accession to the ECHR. These new negotiations seem to offer space for a partial re-negotiation of the draft agreement from last year, about which I blogged earlier here.

Secondly, my colleagues of the Strasbourg Observers blog have this month launched a blog tribute to the Belgian judge at the ECtHR, Françoise Tulkens, who is stepping down after serving since 1998, the start of the fulltime Court. An innovative and well-deserved electronic tribute!

Thirdly, the Grand Chamber judgment in an important freedom of expression case of last month, Mouvement Raëlien Suisse v. Switzerland, has led to a number of interesting online comments about the case. Comments by Rónán Ó Fathaigh are to be found on the Human Rights in Ireland blog; comments by Marko Milanovic on EJIL Talk!; by Rosalind English on UK Human Rights Blog; and by Gabrielle Guillemin on Inforrm's Blog.

Every Gold Medal Winner Started with One of These - The PE Bag Free Tutorial by Ros Coffey of RosMadeMe Blog

Don't you just love watching the Olympics and wish when you were younger that you could have been one of them?   If you do and if you have then you'll be pleased to know that Ros Coffey has a tutorial on her RosMadeMe Blog blog showing you how to make an adorable Olympics PE bag.

Every Gold Medal Winner Started with One of These - The PE Bag Tutorial

Here's what Ros had to say about her tutorial:  I have to tell you that I am exhausted after a fortnight of the Olympics... my sofa is suffering and I know it could have been me... I just know I could have been there... if I had had the right equipment, dedication, physical strength, nerve, stamina, ability to fit into a leotard and of course, a decent bag to keep my gym kit in. Actually I got so carried away, I even looked at what sports were available locally and watched a trailer for the mountain biking... these people are lunatics, they ride down rocks, at speed on their bikes...in lycra! So I have decided to become part of the Olympic legacy by making a PE bag for the next generation... so let's get to it, there is not a moment to waste before Rio!

Here's what Ros had to say about her tutorial:  I don't know about you but I find it really difficult when I am in the Chemist at this time of the year to resist those little holiday pots of shampoo, bath oils and other unguents ready for you to take off to your little piece of Paradise in the sun. I want them all... but you need to have a new bag to put them in . So this week, we have an over-sized cosmetic bag to accommodate them all.

It All Started with Scarlet Ribbons - Double Ribbon Handbag Charm Free Tutorial By Ros Coffey of RosMadeMe Blog

I love ribbon crafts and love floral crafts.  I especially like it when the two are combined.   So, of course, I was happy to see that Ros Coffey had a tutorial on her RosMadeMe Blog blog showing you how to make a double ribbon handbag charm for your purse.   I hope you enjoy Ros's tutorial.

It All Started with Scarlet Ribbons - Double Ribbon Handbag Charm

Copyright © 2012 - All Rights Reserved - Written by Ros Coffey of RosMadeMe Blog.

Here's what Ros had to say about her tutorial:  When I was a little, the class above us sang Scarlet Ribbons and were the stars at a local music festival... they also got to spend the early evening at the Kursaal in Southend, which was to a 10 year old one of the most exciting places in the whole wide world... they had a wall of death in there and I admit to being a tad disappointed when I saw it for the first time there there was no pile of bodies at the bottom! At that time I wore my hair in plaits... this was after the incident when I had to have my hair cut when a hair roller could not be removed as my mother was going through her "daughter in ringlets" phase... I had mostly blue ribbons to go with my school uniform and I longed for scarlet velvet ribbons... So I think that this might be when my love of ribbons bedded in and now even though my hair is too short for plaits, I have a rather decent collection of ribbons... just in case.

How’s My Hair – Accordion Folded Book Free Tutorial By Laura Carson of Artfully Musing Blog

I'm enthralled with Marie Antoinette and all the amazing art creations there are today about her.  So, I was really pleased to see that Laura Carson had a wonderful tutorial on her Artfully Musing blog showing you how to make a Marie Antoinette accordion book.  It's on my "to do" soon list.

Copyright © 2012 - All Rights Reserved - Written by Laura Carson of Artfully Musing.

Here's what Laura had to say about her tutorial: Accordion folded books are simple to make and require no sewing. Everything is assembled with glue. You can make them any size you want and can use them to display art, as a journal, as scrapbook or as a piece of art. The new Rectangular Fleur de Lys Frames carried by Alpha Stamps make perfect book covers. I also thought that Alpha Stamp’s new humorous “How’s My Hair” rubber stamp set and collage sheet would make a fun topic for a book.

The new stamps and images are based on the craze of the French court in the 1770s (Marie Antoinette’s time) of creating huge hairstyles called “le pouf”. Hair dressers used cushions made of fabric or cork and the woman’s own hair as well as added hair pieces that would be combed over and piled on top of the cushions. Next were added enormous curls, feathers, lace, flowers and other ornaments. The bigger the hair the higher the status!

Laura's Bio: After retiring from the computer software industry where I spent my career designing, building and marketing software, I needed a creative outlet. A few years ago I discovered Mixed Media Art and have had a love affair ever since. I’ve taught classes in Altered Books, Handmade Books, Collage Art and Mix Media Art. I currently design for Alpha Stamps and I enjoy trading in various art groups. Starting this blog is a way of sharing my art and the wonderful art I have received from others. I specialize in very detailed multi-layered and textured pieces. I live in Anthem Arizona with my husband Kevin, dog Sandy, and cat Tigger.

Charlie Is My Darling... The Dog Bandana Free Tutorial By Ros Coffey of RosMadeMe Blog

I just love seeing dogs with adorable bandannas tied around their necks. It always reminds me of my "baby Bud" who, when he was groomed, would come home with a cute little bandanna tied around his neck.  The groomer would put one one for the particular season or holiday time frame we were in.  If you love doggie bandanna's, too and have always wanted to learn how to make one then you'll be pleased to know that Ros Coffey has a tutorial on her RosMadeMe Blog blog showing you how to make a dog bandanna.

Charlie is my darling... the dog bandana tutorial

Here's what Ros had to say about her tutorial:  Everyone should have at least one good friend who hears all their troubles, and mine is Charlie who is a rather handsome bulldog, who hears everything and says nothing... actually he fulfils this role for a number of us. Recently, he has become quite the dandy about town sporting topical bandanas... he wore a Union Jack for the jubilee but I thought I would use one of the newly launched animal ribbons from the Jane Means collection... mind you, Charlie asked me to let Jane know he is available for modelling assignments when she realises that a bulldog would add that touch of macho doggy class to her great doggy ribbons!

Ros's Bio:I live by the sea, in Essex, in Leigh-on-sea. Here's what Laura had to say about her tutorial:  This project started with Leslie of Alpha Stamps sending me a picture of the French Kiss 6x6 paper pad and asking me if I would like to create something using these papers.  I said “YES”!  These papers are so up my alley.  Next, I had to decide which images I would use as a focal point and I couldn’t resist using the Cléo de Mérode collage sheet.  Her images are some of my favorites.  With the papers dictating the style and with Cleo as my muse, I decided to make a vintage French book from two painter’s canvases.  I love using canvases because the wood frame on the backside creates little niches that you can fill will all kinds of goodies and it’s really easy to hinge the canvases together.
